Red Equal Sign On Facebook and Twitter Stirs Controversy

Red Equal Sign On Facebook and Twitter Stirs Controversy

What are the little red equal signs popping up all over
Facebook and Twitter? It seems this began as a campaign by
the Human Rights Campaign to support gay and lesbian
same-sex marriage. This organization is one of the largest
supporters of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil
rights in the country.

Many supporters have changed their profile pictures to
reflect this red equal sign. As many as thirteen members of Congress
have changed their Twitter avatars. Several high profile
actors have also made the switch, including, George Takei and
actress Sophia Bush.

In the midst of this the Supreme Court is hearing cases concerning
California's Proposition 8 which bans same-sex couples.
Hearings this week by the Supreme Court will also include
the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act which defines marriage as
a union between a man and a woman.
